2000 lADies

 Art Brett Ewins,
Last week it was Tank Girl and Deadline I thought for my Comic nerding post this week I'd  focus of 2000ad heroines seeing as it's the 37th year it's been in print ,but to start off wanted to focus on Nina Petrova from 2000ad's sister comic Battle Picture weekly-
Love at first sight .. with a fist to the mush lol The Red Devil(Ironic he's from Liverpool) meets the Angel of Death  Nina Petrova for the first time ..Nina I guess is the first female protagonist I can recall seeing in a British boys comic..I might of been four at the time but I loved her in a way..much prettier than Yakob and Ratov (two of Johnny's other comrades)the name Nina Petrova I imagine comes from the Russian Sniper or possibly  Olympic swimmer (Tom Tully also wrote sports comics)- but look at that artwork-Joe Colquhoun  a true master at work..if your a comic fan sought out the Johnny Red volumes you will be astounded by the detail. I'm not entirely sure if Johnny and Nina were lovers they flew on plenty of missions together- and saved each others skins on more than one occasion they never seemed to get a moment- so perhaps they were just comrades.. then again..
Art by John Cooper this time around-see why I  like the aviatrix look so much- their were women pilots on the Eastern Front  durrng the second world war  Johnny Red explores this theme as does Garth Ennis's  Night Witches he must of learnt of this through the pages of Battle too.

Possibly the Most famous of  British comic heroines from 2000ad has to be Judge Anderson now-as she's been portrayed in the Dredd 3D movie by Olivia Thirby(who I thought got the character right-it would be nice if she returns to role) I think the film is actually garnering a cult reputation I do see signs of it amongst non British comic and film fans so I do have some hope for a Judge Death movie.

Now those are leathers!
Thought I'd feature a few Anderson costume posts- some based on the original comic and some from the movie version.
One story that may well never be made into a movie-I can't imagine anyone but Alan Moore and artist  Ian Gibson getting her character right is Halo Jones and I'm not talking about the teeny bopper pop singer  from the late 1980's
It was daring of 2000ad in which at the time to come up with a story (which would of been deemed a lads comic )from a females perspective  ,and wasn't all about gung ho action and daring deeds but I suspect they had faith in Moore as his star was on the rise-the fact he is such a gifted writer he managed to turn story into a success with the readership -like all good sci fi the story was really about the times we are living in now-even though it was set in a far flung future ... but if anyone is thinking about making a Moore movie and Alan was up for it- how about an animated DR and Quinch .I've  always wanted to see that.
 Art Glyn Dillion?..(perhaps Sean Phillips)
As 2000ad proceeded into the end of the 1980's another title appeared on the newstands with a more political standpoint  The comic was called Crisis and a story set in the year 1999- Third World War- not as in thermal nuclear warfare but it dealt with the actual Third World -and the effects of multi -nationalism I think this an issue where the heroine Eve Collins  has returned from  her duties as a "Peace Soldier"  hence the nicely painted  jacket rather than her soldier fatigues- I've bought a bundle of these comics recently so I need to re-read them again some point.. check out that ear ring- cosplay that lol

Purity Brown-from Nemesis the Warlock-the Ultimate Goth Chick....tried to clean photo of image in photoshop

Art -Carlos Ezquerra
I'll finish off with vampire bounty hunter Durham Red- who's switched her look back and forth over the years-you'd probably expect me to prefer her more gothic catsuit look but I don't - Carlos design was just fine and she looks like a Strontium Dog -which her character was in the first place.
Art Carlos Ezquerra..
The gist I get from Strontiom Dog  meant to be  a space western but what they did with her character  in the 90's was propel her far from her timezone and give her a more fetishized look .. much more goffy -and I guess cosplay friendly.
Art By Mark Harrison
Nice as these are-I do much prefer Ezquerra's Durham I'm glad shes back biting necks - in proper Stront gear-the 90's and 2000's stories have created a bit of a paradox-which is typically 2000AD .
New Poll...
I've come up with four different themes to vote for regular posts here check out the right hand side to cast votes .. I'll leave this one up for a week not sure most people have cottoned on that this blog has undergone a resurgence yet.
